Sector coverage

What we cover.

Life sciences is not one market. A clinical-stage biotech and a global CDMO need very different leaders, and the talent pools barely overlap. We work across the whole value chain, from discovery to patient delivery.

Pharma & Biopharma.

Global pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical organisations. Commercial, medical, regulatory and operational leadership across the full product lifecycle.

Biotech & Emerging Therapeutics.

Clinical-stage and pre-commercial biotech, cell and gene therapy, and venture and PE-backed businesses building leadership teams for the first time.

Medical Devices & MedTech.

Devices, surgical technology, implantables and connected health hardware, where regulatory rigour meets commercial and engineering leadership.

Diagnostics & Life Science Tools.

In-vitro diagnostics, molecular testing, laboratory instruments, reagents and consumables. Leaders who understand both the science and the channel.

CRO, CDMO & Pharma Services.

Contract research and manufacturing, clinical services and commercialisation partners. Businesses that win on capability, capacity and client trust.

Digital Health & Health Tech.

Software, data and AI-enabled businesses working across the health system, where life sciences expertise meets genuine technology leadership.

Director to C-suite

The science needs the right people behind it.

Why PartnerWise

Our world of difference.

24/7 AI-sourcing, powered by PW Edge.

Every search is powered by PW Edge, our proprietary talent intelligence platform. Nine intelligence modules, 28+ live data sources, dual-model AI. In a sector where the right leader may sit in a different therapeutic area, a different modality or a different country entirely, that reach matters more than a database of the usual names.

Cross-sector perspective.

Our partners have built leadership teams across industrials, technology, consumer and financial services as well as life sciences. As the industry absorbs data, AI and advanced manufacturing, the best candidate is increasingly not the obvious one, and we know where to look.

Retained. Never contingent.

Every search gets dedicated resource, a defined methodology and a named partner who owns the outcome from brief to placement. No multi-agency contingency, and no handing you to a junior once the pitch is won.

Built for precision. Guaranteed.

Brief to shortlist in 45 days, hit on 95% of mandates. Psychometric profiling via Assessio AI. Every placement guaranteed for 6 months at Director level and 12 months at VP and above. 92% of our clients return.

The catalysts

What triggers a leadership search.

The businesses we work with rarely come to us because everything is going smoothly. There is usually a catalyst. The five we see most often are:

01

Funding rounds and the move to clinic.

A Series B, a first-in-human trial or a pivotal readout changes what a business needs at the top. Founders and scientific teams need commercial, clinical and regulatory leadership that has taken an asset through the next stage before.

02

Commercial launch readiness.

Moving from development to first commercial launch is the single biggest capability shift a life sciences business makes, and it demands market access, medical affairs and commercial leaders who have done it.

03

M&A, carve-outs and PE investment.

Consolidation across pharma services, devices and diagnostics creates urgency to build or rebuild leadership teams that can deliver an investment thesis and stand up to diligence.

04

Regulatory and quality pressure.

New regulatory frameworks, an inspection finding or a market withdrawal put quality and regulatory leadership under scrutiny, and these are among the hardest roles in the sector to fill well.

05

Data, AI and manufacturing transformation.

As businesses adopt AI in discovery, digitise clinical operations and modernise manufacturing, they need leaders who genuinely bridge science and technology rather than one or the other.

Market intelligence

The life sciences talent landscape.

Few sectors are changing their leadership requirements as quickly as life sciences, and the talent pool has not kept pace.

The patent cliff is reshaping priorities.

With significant revenue exposure as major products lose exclusivity, large pharma is hiring for business development, licensing and portfolio leadership, while simultaneously running cost programmes. Those two demands need very different leaders.

Biotech funding is selective again.

Capital is available but concentrated. Clinical-stage businesses need leadership teams credible enough to raise, which puts a premium on executives with a demonstrable track record of getting assets through development and to market.

AI is changing the top of the org chart.

Machine learning in discovery, digital clinical trials and AI-assisted regulatory work all require leaders who can hold science and technology together. That profile is genuinely scarce, and it is being competed for by technology companies as well as pharma.

Advanced modalities have specialised the talent pool.

Cell and gene therapy, radiopharmaceuticals and ADCs need manufacturing, CMC and quality leaders with modality-specific experience. There are very few of them, and they are rarely on the market.

Market access has become a boardroom function.

Pricing pressure, HTA reform and payer scrutiny mean market access and health economics leadership now shapes commercial strategy rather than supporting it, and is increasingly represented at executive level.

Regulatory and quality talent is the tightest market.

Evolving device regulation and rising inspection expectations have made senior regulatory and quality leaders among the hardest hires in the sector, particularly those able to operate across multiple jurisdictions.

We track these shifts through our client work, our network across the sector, and ongoing research through PW Edge. Every search is informed by where the industry is heading, not just where it has been.

Client feedback

What our clients say.

Phil is the absolute best partner. He quickly learned my organisation, asked the right questions to understand the critical success factors for talent to succeed with us, and respectfully challenged us to open our aperture further and consider unique options that would make us a stronger team. He is my first choice and go-to person for executive talent acquisition globally. He changed our business for the better and can help anyone, anywhere.
Chief People OfficerGlobal organisation
I worked with Phil over a two year period, during which he was directly responsible for our executive search function. Phil led some very strategic and senior headhunt campaigns that resulted in executive placements across the group.
Group HR DirectorInternational manufacturing group
I worked with Phil for a couple of years and my dealings with him were invariably open and honest. We worked together to develop a new recruitment model for our business and Phil was instrumental in making that a success. He always worked with a high degree of integrity and inevitably delivered, even on the most challenging search assignments.
Talent Acquisition DirectorGlobal industrial business
I worked with Chris for several months on a specific niche role where there were ultimately four stages to the recruitment process. I found Chris to be an excellent communicator, ensuring that both parties always knew what to expect from each other. I enjoyed working with Chris the whole time. His relaxed, supportive but very well informed manner did more than just facilitate the recruitment process, it drove it forwards. I would work with Chris again without any hesitation.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

We cover pharma and biopharma, biotech and emerging therapeutics, medical devices and medtech, diagnostics and life science tools, CRO, CDMO and pharma services, and digital health. Every search is Director to C-suite and partner-led.
Yes, and they are genuinely different searches. A clinical-stage biotech building its first commercial leadership team needs a different conversation from a global pharma organisation filling a regional role. We work across both, including venture and PE-backed businesses.
Yes. Our partners have partnered with international clients from FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 organisations to private equity-backed ventures, and life sciences leadership is an inherently global market where the right candidate is often in another country.
Our benchmark is brief to shortlist in 45 days, which we hit on 95% of retained mandates. Highly specialised roles, particularly in regulatory, quality and advanced modality manufacturing, can take longer, and we will tell you that at the briefing stage rather than after.
PW Edge is our proprietary talent intelligence platform. It powers every search, drawing on 28+ live data sources across nine intelligence modules to identify candidates, benchmark compensation, map competitor structures and score cultural fit. A standalone client subscription is coming soon.
Large firms have scale, but your search often sits with a junior team once the pitch is won, and off-limits agreements with their biggest clients can restrict where they are able to look. We work retained with a named partner who owns the outcome, we have no such restrictions, and every search is powered by PW Edge. Plus every placement is guaranteed for 6 to 12 months, which few firms will put in writing.
